Event Demo

These photos were taken at actual HS events, and represent "typical" HS scenarios. As in the hunting field, "typical" situations vary greatly. Even in the same area, no two hunts are identical. Similarly, no two HS events are identical. Event directors can create scenarios that simulate any aspect of big game hunting.

The first element of HS shooting is the target. Here is what you'll see downrange at an HS event. Look familiar? You won't use bulls eye targets. Instead, you'll get the same sight picture you'll get in the woods. Note that this undeveloped range isn't perfectly level or mowed. This is an advantage for HS shooting. HS deer target hidden in shadow A Range Officer monitors all shooting to ensure safety. His secondary job is to track elapsed time. In this scenario, the hunter-shooter elected to shoot from kneeling. Note the target is in the open, but obscured by shadow.
This hunter-shooter, started seated as if in a ground blind, engages a silhouette. Note the target is "conveniently" blocked partially by an obstacle, forcing the participant to shoot around it. HS deer target behind an obstacle
HS antelope target moving on a trolley On a different scenario, this hunter-shooter engages a moving target marked to resemble an antelope. The target breaks from cover to cover and the hunter has to ethically make the decision to shoot or let the animal go.
Here a hunter-shooter shoots seated, like from a tree stand. Note the "wobble platform" causing the participant's position to oscillate slightly, similar to a tree stand. Note also the target isn't perfectly level, but rather, angled down slightly as if bounding through the grass. Shooting from a tree stand
Big game on a HS terrain walk HS events can include terrain walks, similar to a 'roving range', where participants have to find, identify, and shoot targets hidden along a trail. This hunter-shooter has found a target and identified it as a buck (note the antlers). For this scenario, participants didn't have doe tags and had to identify the targets before shooting.
HS events can include Standards courses. This type of scenario uses a basic target, such as HS steel, which is scored hit or miss. The hunter-shooter in the photo is making effective use of a handy tree to hit his target. HS Standards course with steel targets
